STEM Subjects Pedagogy

Today we leant about Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) by Jouni Enqvist, Ph.D., Principal Lecturer. Teacher knowledge - starting point consist from: Pedagogical knowledge and Content knowledge.  If you   know more about your subject, it doesn't mean that you are a good teacher. You need also Pedagogical knowledge, methods of teaching, such as dialogical method, group work etc. And also Technological knowledge is very important. We need to utilize all tools computers, overhead projectors, Ipads,  to explain easily and understandably our lessons. We have to not lag behind the times

Principal Lecturer showed us lots of useful sites such as  http://demonstrations.wolfram.com;

Educational technology with Saana Ruhalahti.

Today, we have had lesson about educational technology with Saana Ruhalahti.  We checked our own blogs (checking and updates), have made  Google Site as a teacher´s website and also have worked  Google Drive and its apps

Visit Riihimaen Lukio

Our group have been in Riihimäki. Firstly, we have been in Ponjolanrinteen Koulu, where we have saw arts classroom and  lesson home economics. Our Pedagogical advisor was Riitta Tuorila

Secondly, we were in Riihimaen Lukio Upper secondary school and learnt about ICT projects.

ICT and tablet technology.

On  24th of  March we learnt about Learning innovations, particularly how to use Ipad in education system. Ipad in education as a tool for learning sharing and caring. We are made  Book creator, also we utilized Photochop and IBooks.

My lesson ''Interference of the light'' in Kauriala high school.

 20.03.2014
On Thursday I and Aigerim were in Kauriala high school to observe the Physics lesson. And last week I arranged  with teacher of physics Paula to lead one of the part of lesson in Physics in English (20-30 min). She was very nice to me and gave  topic. It was a topic ''Interference of the light''. I was prepared carefully for the lesson, had  prepared presentation. It was really my first lesson in English. Firstly, when the lesson started, Paula asked homework from students and checked the answer and also on the overhead projector showed solution of these tasks. It was good decision and also she kept time. She gave the solution of tasks to each student. Of course the lesson was in Finnish.
Secondly she introduced me and after that  I continued the lesson in English. In order to organise group work I gave for students puzzles (cards) from which they should collect five pictures. The students who collected  the common picture were combined into one group. Then they should discuss it in groups and answer the following questions: what did you see on this picture? In what was the reason the differences of colour on these pictures? I gave them 3 minutes for discussion and then they should were briefly present their  answers.
Before that the students never have had  lesson of physics in English. They were pleasant surprised. They tried to explain the pictures and each student gave own opinion about it. However, some students did not give any ideas. From my point of view it depends from their English levels.
Thirdly, we had discussed about these tasks and I told them this phenomenon called interference of light. So we discovered today's topic, after that I considered  interference of the light. At the end of my presentation I showed the video which helped for students to understood  the topic deeply.
Next Paula continued the lesson, she explained the next topic ''Diffraction of the light". Her lesson was usual. To show phenomenon of  diffraction on the lesson teacher has used equipment the laser.
I have gave the students a sticker for feedback. They wrote me what did they think about this lesson, did they understand this topic and my english, what did they have expected from this lesson? At the end of the lesson the students stuck the sticker on the blackboard. Feedback  of the students are showed below.
In my opinion I spent a good lesson. I was satisfied although it would be much better. The comments were useful and some students didn't understand me, I think their English level were not so good. They didn't understand some terms of physics in English. After lesson Paula gave me feedback about my lesson. She said that my English level better than hers. She said it was a good lesson. Her liked, how I divided students on groups and how the students worked actively and  my explanation as well.

Entrepreneurship Education

 Entrepreneurship Education planning teacher's work.

On Wednesday we were divided in groups and each group made a plan of project of how to develop a school or organization to teach Entrepreneurship Education and be more entrepreneurial. Every project consisted of objectives, methods, timetable and expected results.

Rocket science method with Vesa Tuomela

Rocket science method with Vesa Tuomela

On Tuesday we had good lesson about Entrepreneurship Education. Mr. Vesa explained about entrepreneurship education very well. I think we understood it. He can work with people because his lesson was very interesting. He divided us in group. Every group presented their topic and after lunch we constructed maket of rocket. For that we firstly discussed in group, what kind of rocket we want to construct and who will  fly in space? We discussed all thing necessary for the flight.

Dialogical learning methods with Helena Aarnio.

Today our group discussed about of Dialogical learning methods and knowledge with Helena Aarnio. On the lesson we divided a small groups, and found out  what difference between dialogue and discussion. We tried to distinguish connection between them and found the next:

Dialogue is one of the methods of conversations: common and product decision; everyone can continue conversation giving some arguments; there is no disputes; no one dominate;  everybody listen carefully,  collaborations; create new ideas.

Discussion: common decision can be made or not; everyone has own aim or change it over discussion; one of them can be dominates; making argue and competition.

Finally, we have discussed difference between traditional and dialogical methods and were drawing some pictures like this look at below

My first lesson observation

My first lesson observation
Since March 3 on Monday we began pedagogical internship. To us came the principal  of Kaurialan high school. He talked about his school, about teachers who teach and  about the purposes which to put school. This is the best high school in Hämeenlinna. there are 3 the higher the school in Hämeenlinna. We learned a lot about this school, because our pedagogical practice is connected to this school much.
The next day we were at this school, and us acquainted to the school. I was very interesting how lesson of  physics  is passing, how the teacher interacts with students, what kinds of  learning environments have been used.  And I wanted to see it all with my own eyes. On Thursday at 13.15 I and my colleague Aigerim observed a physics lesson. The lesson was led by the teacher of physics doctor Phd Paula Perkkalainen. During the lesson we only observed a lesson. The lesson was attended by 23 students. Absent students was two. Though the lesson was in the Finnish language, I understood a today's topic of the lesson, because I'm also teacher of physics. The theme was refraction of  beam in the prism and total reflection.
Since the beginning of the teacher asked homework, although did not check everybody. And two students went out to the board to solve the task. Then the teacher did the experiment, the beam is passing through the prism and on the board described in detail all. The teacher also prepared a good presentation, the students  saw simulation of the total reflection.
In addition the teacher gave one task. And they solved the problem independently. In the end, she showed the solution on the screen. The lesson lasted 75 minutes. At the end of the lesson, the teacher  gave two exercises for  homework. But in my opinion, it  was the usual lesson, in generally  she  was talking. Although the topic was not quite simple. Not all students were so active, although it seems that most of them understood today's topic of the lesson.
